Shaw to change pricing plans due to public outcry

Shaw has just announced a new pricing plan to offer higher download caps at higher prices as well as new unlimited plans. This stands out from the usual pricing schemes of lowering download caps and increasing both speed AND overage fees such as Rogers and Bell. Shaw’s mindset here is greater flexibility and customers increased use of the internet will lead to happier customers and increased revenue. Shaw’s new pricing plan would also double customer’s download limits in some cases.

The change was sparked due to public outcry concerning the CRTC ruling which would allow for the elimination of unlimited downloading plans. Limiting Canadians in their pricing options in an increasingly expensive marketplace which is becoming worse after many users are facing extra charges when streaming services like Netflix. After these price increases many Canadians now find it isn’t affordable to stream media over the internet. It makes sense though. The fact that these services are competing products to their own television service — it is no secret why they want to protect themselves from new competition in the marketplace.

Hopefully this encourages other ISPs to take another look at their very profitable pricing plans and give a little back to the customer.
