Since Google first announced the first of its Nexus line in the Nexus One by HTC, in January 2010. The name Nexus has been the Holy Grail of smartphones for Android fans. Since then there have been two follow ups to the original Nexus, and both are manufactured by Samsung, the Nexus S, and now the Galaxy Nexus. Does the Galaxy Nexus live up to the hype of being the Number 1 Smartphone of the Year? Is it all that it is hyped up to be?

Let me introduce you to the Samsung Galaxy Nexus, the 3rd rendition of the Google-branded Nexus line-up, and the 2nd go-around for Samsung.

Impressed with the new features yet?

As with all other Nexus line, it is the introductory handset pre-installed with the latest major Android update, Android version 4.0, codename Ice Cream Sandwich. Unlike the previous version, Honeycomb, which is specifically for Android Tablets. Ice Cream Sandwich is Google's attempt to integrate the Operating System for both Tablets and Smartphones. It is well built, with lots of new features and animations that will make it a pleasure to interact with on Tablets and Smartphones alike. But the operating system is nothing without a capable hardware to run it.

Samsung has had the bragging rights to having the slimmest smartphone since it released the Galaxy S II, and the Galaxy Nexus is not to be excused from this. Although it is not as slim as the GSII (8.5mm), it comes in a decent 135.5 x 67.9 x 8.9mm at its slimmest, and weighing in at a respectable 135 g.  While some may argue that the GSII was a bit too light at 116 g, the extra weight over the months is a nice weight gain. We're not talking about fat gain, the Nexus gained its weight in muscle mass. The screen is now 4.65 inches, with 720 x 1280 pixels (~316 ppi pixel density), and Super Amoled HD. Not quite there with the iPhone 4's retina display which is at 326 PPI, but Super Amoled display alone offers better colour contrast and provides sharper and colourful images. In my honest opinion.

The phone itself is very well designed.  The teardrop style means the phone is thinner up top and bulges out a bit at the bottom. Complimented by the Nexus S-style curved glass for a natural feel when the phone is up to your ear. It has nicely rounded edges all around which makes it very comfortable to hold for extended periods. The change from the smooth and somewhat slippery battery cover of the Galaxy S II, the textured battery cover of the Galaxy Nexus makes it more secure in your hand. The power button is in its usual spot on the right side of the device, while the volume rocker is on the left.  While to volume rocker is adjusted slightly to be more closer to the mid section of the phone, I find it to be in a more convenient spot now. It definitely shows that a lot of thought has been put in to the design of the Galaxy Nexus, which makes me wonder....why did they place the micro USB slot and the 3.5 mm headphone jack at the bottom of the device.  This leaves the top portion of the phone empty.  It is not a common spot for most smartphones nowadays, but if you really think about it, how often do you have both micro USB and the earphones plugged in at the same time???

So enough about the boring, geeky stuff that only techno geeks like me are interested in. But for those of you who ARE techno-geeks, see this link courtesy of GSMArena for more specs and numbers that comes along with the device.

Now that that's out of the way, lets talk fun stuff...

For fans of the Nexus line like me, we look forward to the latest rendition of the ones they call "Google Phone". It was after all, the original Nexus One that officially converted me from an iPhone fan boy (yes I admit it), to an Android-geek. As I stated above, the Nexus line is the Holy Grail for Android devices. It usually offers the best Hardware and Software available to Android. The Nexus One offered the first 1Ghz processor, the Nexus S offered the 1st NFC-capable, Super AMOLED display, and the Galaxy Nexus is the first to offer Face-unlock, Android Beam, and the complete integration of Google+. Other noteable offerings that I will highlight for you is in the camera. The zero-lag shutter allows you to literally click away, and the shutter is ready for the next shot in half a second. Also, the native capability of the camera to take panoramic shots in one single motion is smooth as butter.  Just point, click once, and glide the camera along without worrying about matching up to the previous shot.  The phone does all the stitching for you.

The face unlock feature is very accurate too. So accurate in fact that it can be tricked by using a photo of the the phone's owner. While this may seem like a security issue (and it really is), this feature is more of a fun and interesting way to quickly unlock your phone.  It is not meant to replace your normal pin code. The whole time I'm using the phone, not once did the phone unlock to another person's face. I was surprised in its ability to recognize me even in low lighting conditions.

Android Beam is a beefed up version of the previous NFC offering. While the previous NFC was limited to what you can share, Android Beam allows two NFC-capable device to quickly share websites, contacts, apps, etc... just by touching the 2 devices together and clicking on the screen.  While the technology is still fairly new and not in the mainstream yet, I can see this capability coming in very handy in the near future.

Similarly, the integration of Google+ on this device allows you to quickly upload photos  to your Google+ profile. A perfect add-on for socialites who doesn't mind sharing anything, and everything on the internet. (yikes)

Since we're also talking about Android 4.0 when we discuss the Galaxy Nexus, there's one thing I should mention, that smartphone users might find odd with Ice Cream Sandwich. While we want things to be quick and snappy when we interact with our devices, I found ICS to be somewhat... 'lagged' when I first played with it. I tried to avoid using the word "laggy" because that's such a negative word when referring to any smartphone OS.  Believe me, I would've used it... but up until a few hours into playing with the new OS, I kinda liked it.  There's something about the smoothness of the transition, and the slight 'delay' that it added when switching from screen to screen.  It's very hard for me to describe it, but I think Google just found the perfect "in-between" with ICS. Even as I switch from interacting with the Galaxy Nexus to my iMac while I write this review, it even made my iMac feel that much smoother. (if that's even possible).  So there you have it... the very first compliment between Android and an iDevice.

The Galaxy Nexus is set to be released officially by Bell and Virgin mobile in Canada on December 8th with a 3yr contract price of $159.95.  But some Bell, Virgin, and Best Buy locations are releasing them a day in advance.  Mark it down, December 7th at 1PM.

The Future of TV Begins Now on Xbox 360

Kinect for Xbox 360 brings voice control to living room entertainment with update that launches Dec. 6.

TORONTO. — Dec. 5, 2011 — A revolution is happening in the living room. Xbox 360 is transforming how you enjoy TV entertainment and is giving you the power to control it with your voice. The next generation of TV entertainment begins with the announcement by Microsoft Corp. of the launch of an all-new Xbox 360 experience including the first group of new, custom applications from world leading TV and entertainment content providers on Xbox LIVE.

“A new era in entertainment begins where all your entertainment is together in one place — your games, movies, TV shows, music and sports,” said Don Mattrick, president of the Interactive Entertainment Business at Microsoft. “With this update, Xbox 360 system owners will experience Kinect voice control integrated with Bing search, making your TV and entertainment experiences more social and personal than ever.”

“Microsoft has just built and delivered it: A single box that ties together all the content you want, made easily accessible through a universal, natural, voice-directed search. This is now the benchmark against which all other living room initiatives should be compared,” said James McQuivey of Forrester Research in “Engaged TV: Xbox 360 Leads The Way To A New Video Product Experience,”* Sunday, Dec. 4. “…with more than 57 million people worldwide already sitting on a box that’s about to be upgraded for free, Microsoft has not only built the right experience, it has ensured that it will spread quickly and with devastating effect.”

Looking for that great deal that you didn't quite find during the Black Friday sales? Look no further. Many Canadian retailers are participating in the Cyber Monday online sales and we have found several great deals!

Here are some Cyber Monday tips courtesy of smartcanucks.ca:

Avoid Scams!

1) Make sure your security software is updated and activated.
2) Purchase items from a legitimate site.  Connect to shopping sites through a search engine or by actually typing in the web address.  Do not access sites through popups or links from other websites.
3) Use unique passwords and usernames that include capital letters and numbers
4) Make sure you purchase items through a secure site.  The web address should read "https://" and have a padlock next to it.
5) Use your common sense.  If the deal is too good to be true, then it is probably a scam.

Respect the Workplace

1) Purchase your items during a coffee break or over the lunch hour.
2) Do your homework!  Write down the exact web address, items you wish to purchase and promotional codes (if needed).  This will aid in a swift transaction so you can quickly get back to work.
3) If a deal is time sensitive, ask your boss if you may quickly purchase something online.  If they are reluctant, show them all the details (web address, items etc.) and ensure the process will only take a few minutes.
4) Do not tie up work computers!  If your transaction is taking a lot of time to process, close your order and try again in a few minutes.
5) Do not tie up work printers!  If possible, don't print off your order confirmation form until you get home.
6) Ensure you are purchasing from legitimate website.  The last thing you want to do is download a virus onto your work computer.
7) Do not let online shopping distract you from your job.  If your attention is needed somewhere else, shut off your computer screen!  Remember, your job is more important than a good deal.  Plus, where are you going to get the money for a good deal if you are unemployed?

Be Prepared

1) Make sure your credit card hasn't expired
2) Read the fine print!  Know exactly when your deals begin and end.  Be aware of all the exclusions.  Know exactly which forms of payment are acceptable.
3) Ensure your credit card isn't "maxed out".  You can't buy anything if have no credit!

The all new iPhone 4S is launching in Canada on October 14 and we have some information on pricing and availability.  The Telus pre-order system went live at 3AM EST and now lists the following price plans:

Telus iPhone 4S Pricing

  • iPhone 4S 16GB - $159.00
  • iPhone 4S 32GB - $269.00
  • iPhone 4S 64GB - $369.00

The new iPhone is available via the Telus Pre Order system which is now live. Telus is offering $45 and $60 Promo Plans which include voice and data. If you are wondering if you are eligble to upgrade at these prices, click here for more information.

Rogers has yet to announce pricing plans and their Pre Order system is not up and running until 6 AM EST.

Rogers Pre Order

We reached out to Rogers via Twitter to find out about early HUP for any existing customers that locked into 3 year contracts when the iPhone 4 came out, but so far no new information has been released. Rogers used to allow for 12 month option but in May 2011 this was changed to 24 months.Rogers

What does this mean? It means any customers who purchased an iPhone 4 last June are not able to pick up the iPhone 4S without penalty. If you are with Rogers, you can visit this link to find out more. In the past Rogers has allowed customers upgrading from the iPhone 3G to the iPhone 3GS the option to upgrade without penalty. And likewise when the iPhone 4 was launched, however it appears that Rogers will not be allowing any early adopters the option to upgrade to the iPhone 4S without penalty.

If you are a Bell customer, you are in luck as the Pre Order system is also live and running. Pricing plans are as follows:

3 Year Contract Price:

  • iPhone 4S 16GB - $159.95
  • iPhone 4S 32GB - $269.95
  • iPhone 4S 64GB - $369.95

No Contract Price

  • iPhone 4S 16GB - $649.95
  • iPhone 4S 32GB - $769.95
  • iPhone 4S 64GB - $869.95

Bell is currently listing 3 voice and data plans starting at $55 per month. There has been rumor of a 5GB plan for $55 that may be of interest as well. For more information visit Bell.

You can also pre order the iPhone 4S online at Apple.ca.

For those anxious customers that are pre-ordering you may wish to look into the fine print and ensure you know what you are signing up for. It would appear if you are reserving a device, the device ships to you and will not be held at your local store. So if you decide to line up at 4 AM on October 14 hoping to get your shiny new iPhone 4S, you may be surprised that the store does not have your device on hold. Please contact your carrier of choice to ensure their policy.

We would like to know, will you be lining up for the iPhone 4S? Do you think the iPhone 4S is a contender for 2011/2012 with the competition?

Rogers has finally flipped the switch on LTE in 3 of the country's largest metropolitan areas. Toronto, Montreal and Vancouver now have the distinction of joining Ottawa as the first cities to enjoy the blazing fast speeds of Rogers newest mobile offering. Tektok attended the Toronto launch event today outside the Rogers offices, where they set up a fully branded Rogers LTE tour bus allowing the media to get hands on time with all of the LTE launch devices.

Well, how fast exactly is Rogers LTE offering? Extremely fast if you are within the core coverage map. Inside the Rogers tour bus, we were seeing speeds of 60MB download, 20MB upload on speedtest.net. Those are insane numbers for mobile broadband (by contrast, connected to my office ethernet on my laptop, I get only 30MB download / 27MB upload). I don't know if the speeds we witnessed today on that bus are indicative of what we'll see when not positioned directly in front of the Rogers Head Office, but it was still amazing to see that kind of speed happening over the air.

A new network essentially doesn't mean much without devices that utilize it, and thus Rogers has announced Tablet, Smartphone, Mobile Hotspot and Rocket Stick offerings to get Canadians up and running on LTE this fall. The HTC Jetstream 10 inch tablet, the Samsung Galaxy S II LTE smartphone, the Sierra Wireless Rocket Hotspot and the Sierra Wireless USB rocket stick are the 4 launch devices Rogers will make available to consumers this fall. All 4 devices were on-hand today and all seemed very capable.

The number 1 question consumers will be asking themselves this fall with regards to upgrading from 4G is "Do I REALLY need LTE?". The answer, if you care about having what amounts to home or office landline internet speed in your pocket at all times, is a resounding YES. For example, playing a YouTube video on the Galaxy S II LTE smartphone was a completely different experience than it is on an iPhone 4 or any other 4G smartphone. We played 4 different HD videos on youtube and NOT ONCE was there a spinning "loading" indicator. The grey/red loading bar that usually shows loading progress while you stream youtube content went from 0 to 100% complete almost instantly. While testing web browsing on the HTC Jetstream, we loaded up CNN.com and pages appeared almost as if they were cached... flash ads and all. There was no sequential loading of text and images on the page, but rather ALL of the page content just suddenly appeared after every link we clicked. Each entire page was just kind of... there. It is a noticeable difference from the mobile browsing you're currently used to.

Again, it has to be said that we witnessed these amazing speeds only in front of the Rogers Head Office, on day 1 of the rollout, with likely very low traffic on the network given that very few consumers are using LTE at this point in time. We will need to do more extensive testing of the network within the coverage map over the next few weeks using the Sierra Wireless Rocket Stick Rogers was kind enough to provide to us for review. Once we get a better picture of real world speeds in different locations under a more realistic network load, we will post our full review. We will also discuss the Rogers LTE price plans at the time of our full LTE review, however it is notable that if you were looking forward to a data plan similar to the old iPhone 6GB for $30 per month, you're in luck as Rogers has announced the limited time offer of 10GB for $52.93 until November 28, 2011 (by contrast the regular 9GB LTE data plan will run you $92.93 p/mth... with the cheapest plan being 2GB for $47.93 p/mth)

In terms of availability, the Rocket Stick is available right now directly from Rogers, with the HTC Jetstream tablet launching later on October 18th. No word yet on a launch date for the Samsung Galaxy S II LTE or the Rocket Mobile Hotspot, but we assume it will be soon, based on the fact that the Galaxy S II we tested today looked 100% ready for retail as it was already loaded with dedicated Rogers apps and widgets. You can preorder the Rocket Hotspot, Jetstream and Galaxy S II LTE now from Rogers to ensure you get yours as soon as they become available.

Bell was quick to the draw announcing and launching their LTE (long-term evolution) network in Canada.

The LTE service launched in Toronto, Mississauga, Hamilton, Kitchener Waterloo and Guelph areas on September 14 and Bell is anticipating speeds of between 12 and 25 Megabits per second.

Currently the only device announced is the Sierra Wireless U313 Turbo Stick which can be purchased for $219.95 with no contract or as low as $79.95 in a 3 year contract.

Another device which also appears to be available soon is the Novatel Wireless U679 Turbo Stick and offers similar speeds/service with pricing as low as $59.95 in a 3 year contract.

We were provided with our review unit and have been putting Bell LTE to the test.

Speed

We were more then pleased with the speed when connected to LTE. The indicator on the Sierra Wireless stick will show green when connected via LTE.

When failing over to HPSA+ it will show blue. The average download speed during our week of testing has been 9 mbps.

While this may seem low compared to the potential 75 mpbs that LTE can deliver, it is quite good for an average.

Our lowest was about 6 mpbs which is faster then the current 3G network. And our maximum download speed...

Speed Test

A whopping 38 Mb/sec and also take special note of the upload speeds. Almost every home internet package offers no more then 1 Mb/sec upstream, with a very few exceptions from other providers, but to my knowledge, this is the first consumer internet service to deliver more then 2 Mb/sec upstream.

Now these speeds can easily be affected with even the slightest movement so during a commute or a road trip, you may experience quite a few spikes, however service did not disconnect or interfere with our video streaming tests.

Coverage

Bell has provided a coverage map, and from our testing it was very accurate. During a commute via the Go train on the Lakeshore East line, we did not experience LTE until we were almost at the Danforth station.

The LTE service was connected for about 5 minutes before kicking us back to HSPA speeds, and then approaching Toronto Union Station, the LTE service kicked back in, and the screenshot above was actually taken from this journey.

Trying the LTE stick in areas East and West of Toronto resulted in only HSPA+ speeds as expected.

Coverage Map

And last but not least....

Price

Given the fact that this device is capable of reaching speeds of up to 75 Mb/sec, if you were to reach those speeds, technically you could exceed the allotted 1.5GB data plan within 10 minutes. So if you were thinking of catching up on the latest tv show, or uploading some pictures or videos to Facebook, you must continue to keep an eye on the data used.

For the 1.5GB data plan, the pricing starts at $45.00 per month, and is tiered in the following price plans:

  $45 $60 $75 $90
Data used in a month Up to 1.5 GB More than 1.5 GB and up to 3 GB More than 3 GB and up to 6 GB More than 6 GB and up to 9 GB
Monthly fee adjusts based on your usage If data use exceeds 1.5 GB, automatically move to $60 tier If data use exceeds 3 GB, automatically move to $75 tier If data use exceeds 6 GB, automatically move to $90 tier Data use exceeding 9 GB will be charged $10/GB

Other details

  • Data usage over 10 GB: $10/GB
  • U.S. data roaming: $3/MB
  • One-time activation fee: $35
  • Monthly optional paper billing fee: $2

Well as you can see from our speed test screenshots, the LTE service more then lives up to our expectations.
Coveragewww.dyerware.comwww.dyerware.comwww.dyerware.comwww.dyerware.comwww.dyerware.com
While the coverage maps may indicate LTE is in a vast majority of the GTA and surrounding area, it was difficult to obtain LTE service unless you were in the downtown area or within close range. This seems a bit rushed but only time can tell how quick LTE can expand.
Pricewww.dyerware.comwww.dyerware.comwww.dyerware.comwww.dyerware.comwww.dyerware.com
This is tricky. Comparing the pricing plans to HSPA+ turbo sticks, the plans seem very close. The main problem is the fast speed: Quicker the download speed, the quicker the data usage, and unfortunately also the price.
Overallwww.dyerware.comwww.dyerware.comwww.dyerware.comwww.dyerware.comwww.dyerware.com
Overall we were impressed with the LTE Turbo Stick and were more then happy with the LTE speeds. Unfortunately until the pricing can provide more data usage , this is not a service for everyone. For normal email and browsing needs, you can expect to stay within the first tier, however with speeds greater then your home internet, you may find yourself going into the next tier.

For more information you can visit Bell.

While Rogers was quick to the draw to announce LTE as early as September 28 in Toronto, Bell has been quiet to annouce their plans. Until now. From a reliable source, we've learned that Bell's LTE service will be here soon and they are launching with two Samsung devices, the Galaxy S II LTE smartphone, and the Galaxy Tab 8.9 LTE tablet. Here is more info on each device:

The Galaxy S II LTE features a 4.5" (480x800) Super AMOLED Plus capacative display with Gorilla Glass, and is powered by a dual-core 1.5GHz processor and 1GB of RAM. It has an 8MP camera with LED flash and 1080p HD video capture, along with a secondary 2MP camera. It runs on Android 2.3 Gingerbread.

The Galaxy tab 8.9 LTE features an 8.9" (1280x800) capacative display, and is powered by a 1.5GHz processor and 1GB of RAM. It runs on Android Honeycomb 3.0, and includes a 3.15MP camera with LED flash and 720p HD capture, with a front-facing 2MP camera as well.

Both offer LTE connectivity, which has a maximum download speed of 150 Mbps.

No word on specific dates or pricing for these devices or Bell's LTE network, but we think it may be sometime this fall.

Stay tuned for more info!

Update:  Samsung has reached out to advise us that the information we received is not true and based on rumors.  Rumor Squashed?

Update #2: Bell has beat Rogers to the punch and will launching their LTE network TOMORROW! Bell will be launching with only the LTE/HSPA+ Turbo Stick, and will eventually be announcing a mystery LTE smartphone, and an LTE tablet.  Despite what has been announced, we still expect to see the Galaxy S2 LTE and the Galaxy Tab LTE announced within the coming weeks as the mystery devices. For more information you can visit Bell and full press release is listed below. Bell to launch 4G LTE network in Toronto, Mississauga, Hamilton, Kitchener-Waterloo and Guelph tomorrow

Bell first to offer next generation LTE data speeds to country's largest wireless market and leading Canadian innovation centres

MONTREAL, Sept., 13, 2011 2011 -- Bell Mobility today announced the launch of its next generation 4G LTE wireless network service in areas of Toronto, Mississauga, Hamilton, Kitchener-Waterloo and Guelph tomorrow. This state-of the-art network will offer the fastest mobile Internet speeds available to some of Canada's most populous urban areas, including the Waterloo region innovation hub and the country's largest wireless market in the Toronto area.

"LTE is the next step in ensuring Bell continues to deliver the best networks in the world to Canadian consumers and businesses, backed up by the newest data devices and the leading mobile services and content available. LTE will deliver amazing data access speeds - at least three times faster than the Bell HSPA+ network originally launched less than three years ago," said Wade Oosterman, President of Bell Mobility.

With super-fast Internet and data access speeds for both business users and consumers, 4G LTE from Bell offers HD quality online TV and video; wireless video conferencing and chat with quality previously available only on wireline or high-speed Wi-Fi connections; unprecedented mobile download times for apps, large attachments, presentations and apps (with VPN compatibility for secure file access); and mobile gaming on a whole new level, with stand-out graphics and video quality.

Bell's 4G LTE roll-out will bring coverage to additional Canadian markets this year and through 2012. Bell is focused on an urban rollout first, with the timing of broader rural and remote coverage deployments contingent on the outcome of Industry Canada's 700 MHz spectrum auction.

Bringing next generation 4G LTE first to Canada's top wireless markets and technology innovation centres also underscores Bell's commitment to the continued growth of the country's national wireless ecosystem.

"We partner with mobile technology start-ups, developer communities and established innovators across Waterloo and the GTA - they're a big part of the more than $800 million in R&D spending that Bell invests in Canada each year," said Stephen Howe, Bell's Executive Vice President and Chief Technology Officer (CTO). "We're happy to help accelerate innovation with the fastest wireless network technology commercially available."

Customers can buy next generation Bell LTE/HSPA+ Turbo Sticks now, which allow users to connect their laptops to the 4G LTE network, and will be able to purchase LTE/HSPA+-capable smartphones and tablets later this year.

LTE offers fastest mobile Internet access
LTE (short for the 4th Generation "Long Term Evolution" mobile standard) offers data speeds as fast as 75 megabits per second (Mbps) and typical speeds ranging between 12 and 25 Mbps. As the standard and products evolve, speeds are expected to increase to as fast as 150 Mbps.

Bell's 4G LTE network is also the first and only Canadian 4G network to switch to the next fastest speed available when outside LTE areas, either Bell's Dual Carrier HSPA+ providing peak speeds up to 42 Mbps (typical between 7 and 14 Mbps) or HSPA+ offering speeds up to 21 Mbps (typical between 3.5 and 8 Mbps). Bell introduced Dual Carrier HSPA+ to North America and now offers the high-speed service to approximately 70% of the Canadian population. Bell offers total HSPA+ coverage to more than 96% of Canadians.

Bell network innovation and investment
Developed in partnership with leading network infrastructure suppliers Cisco, Huawei and Nokia Siemens Networks, Bell's 4G LTE network provides a world-class wireless platform that will stimulate innovation and foster strong economic growth in Canada's mobile hubs and centres of wireless excellence.

Bell is committed to investing in Canada's network infrastructure, driving more new capital investment - $3 billion per year - than any other communications company in the country. Bell's total Research & Development investments increased in 2010 (the latest period for which figures are available), surpassing $800 million.

Bell has rolled out internationally renowned wireless networks, supporting the rapid growth of smartphone usage and mobile Internet, Mobile TV and other data services, and new fibre network services such as Bell Fibe TV and Fibe Internet. Bell is also launching a new Fibre to the Home network across the Québec City region - Canada's largest urban FTTH build - and to new condominium buildings, apartments and housing developments across Québec and Ontario.

LTE products and pricing
The 4G LTE Sierra Wireless U313 Turbo Stick is available in select Bell stores tomorrow, September 14; for online purchase for $79.95 on a three-year term ($219.95 with no term contract); and in Bell stores across LTE service areas on September 15. In coming weeks, Bell will add the 4G LTE Novatel Wireless U679 Turbo Stick. 4G LTE flex-rate data plans start at $45 a month for 1.5 gigabytes (GB) which automatically adjusts based on data usage. Rogers Canada has announced some major news and this is great news. Currently Rogers has been testing LTE in the Ottawa area and today have announced the availability of LTE in Toronto on September 28.

What does this mean? Well for those without a LTE (4G) device, it does not mean much. For those with LTE devices currently or that are in the market to purchase a new smartphone, you are in luck!

Rogers will be launching several LTE devices by the end of the year including the Samsung Galaxy S II LTE Smartphone; the LTE Rocket™ mobile hotspot (Sierra Wireless AirCard® 754S); Rogers LTE RocketTM stick (now available in Ottawa); LTE Tablet from a leading manufacturer; and an HTC LTE Smartphone.

Montreal and Vancouver areas will also be getting LTE by the end of the year, so if you feel excluded, you can visit Rogers and sign up to be notified.

Ottawa LTE customers are currently experiencing typical download speeds ranging from 12 Mbps to 25 Mbps with an LTE supported device. Currently if you have an 3G enabled device in the GTA you can expect to see an average 1Mbps to 3Mbps, wtih the occasional bump up to 5Mbps. These devices are capable of achieving up to 7Mbps but I have yet to see speeds that great.

Press Release »

TORONTO, Aug. 30, 2011 /CNW/ - Rogers Communications Inc. announced today the next phase of its commercial launch of Canada's first Long Term Evolution (LTE) network, bringing the latest global wireless technology to Canada's largest city - Toronto on September 28, 2011. Rogers was the first carrier to introduce LTE to Canadians with its Ottawa launch on July 7, 2011.

"Ottawa residents are already enjoying the benefits of Canada's fastest network technology - now Torontonians can begin the countdown to LTE and a whole new wireless experience," said John Boynton, Executive Vice President and Chief Marketing Officer. "LTE is the latest example of how Rogers continues to bring the world's best and newest innovations to Canadians first."

Rogers also announced customers in Toronto and Ottawa can be among the first in the world to experience LTE wireless devices when the company continues to roll out its LTE product line this fall.  It includes:  the Samsung Galaxy S II LTE Smartphone; the LTE Rocket™ mobile hotspot (Sierra Wireless AirCard® 754S); Rogers LTE RocketTM stick (now available in Ottawa); LTE Tablet from a leading manufacturer; and the previously announced HTC Smartphone.

LTE is a next generation technology that will enable unparalleled connectivity, giving customers a mobile broadband experience similar to what they currently experience at home and at work. This next-generation mobile speed will create a better experience for customers using highly-interactive applications like multi-player gaming and rich multi-media communications. It will deliver more usage capacity, which means more users can simultaneously access the network at top speeds without affecting overall network performance.

This year, Rogers will have LTE devices capable of maximum theoretical download speeds of up to 100 Mbps. Today, devices are capable of downloading up to 75 Mbps and Ottawa LTE customers are experiencing typical download speeds ranging from 12 Mbps to 25 Mbps. These speeds are significantly faster than those Canadians experience on any other wireless network. As device selection evolves, maximum theoretical download speeds on the Rogers network will increase to up to 150 Mbps.

"This is an example of how we continue to bring the world's best and newest innovations to our customers and Canadians to be first to enjoy a faster and superior mobile experience with any one of our LTE devices," said John Boynton. "Rogers' LTE network and devices will redefine the way we work, play and communicate."

Starting today, Rogers customers in Toronto and Ottawa can reserve a selection of LTE wireless devices through the new Rogers Reservation System at www.rogers.com/lte.

Rogers was the first Canadian carrier to start conducting technical trials last fall, followed by the commitment to a multiyear deployment that began with Canada's first LTE launch in Ottawa in July 2011. Rogers LTE will expand to Montreal and Vancouver this fall.

The launch of LTE reinforces Rogers' proud history of innovative firsts and commitment to investing to build Canada's digital future. Rogers was the first carrier in North America to launch an HSPA+ network; the first carrier in Canada to launch GSM; the first in the world to launch the BlackBerry; and the first in Canada to launch both the Android and the iPhone.

Canadians can learn more about Rogers' LTE network by visiting www.rogers.com/lte. To find out when LTE is coming to your area, sign up at www.IwantmyLTE.ca.

Well this is a sad day for Apple and Apple fans across the world. After 14 years, Steve Jobs has handed in his resignation letter to the board and is no longer acting CEO. Tim Cook has been elected by the board to act as CEO of Apple. With the iPhone 5 launch just week(s) away, this move certainly does surprise me. As he does remain an employee of Apple, I do wonder if he will be on stage to announce the new devices in September.

To the Apple Board of Directors and the Apple Community:

I have always said if there ever came a day when I could no longer meet my duties and expectations as Apple’s CEO, I would be the first to let you know. Unfortunately, that day has come.

I hereby resign as CEO of Apple. I would like to serve, if the Board sees fit, as Chairman of the Board, director and Apple employee.

As far as my successor goes, I strongly recommend that we execute our succession plan and name Tim Cook as CEO of Apple.

I believe Apple’s brightest and most innovative days are ahead of it. And I look forward to watching and contributing to its success in a new role.

I have made some of the best friends of my life at Apple, and I thank you all for the many years of being able to work alongside you.

Steve

UPDATE: Tim Cook has addressed Apple employees and the leaked memo has surfaced.

Team:

I am looking forward to the amazing opportunity of serving as CEO of the most innovative company in the world. Joining Apple was the best decision I’ve ever made and it’s been the privilege of a lifetime to work for Apple and Steve for over 13 years. I share Steve’s optimism for Apple’s bright future.

Steve has been an incredible leader and mentor to me, as well as to the entire executive team and our amazing employees. We are really looking forward to Steve’s ongoing guidance and inspiration as our Chairman.

I want you to be confident that Apple is not going to change. I cherish and celebrate Apple’s unique principles and values. Steve built a company and culture that is unlike any other in the world and we are going to stay true to that—it is in our DNA. We are going to continue to make the best products in the world that delight our customers and make our employees incredibly proud of what they do.

I love Apple and I am looking forward to diving into my new role. All of the incredible support from the Board, the executive team and many of you has been inspiring. I am confident our best years lie ahead of us and that together we will continue to make Apple the magical place that it is.

Tim
