Futureshop embraces new LG Cinema 3D Technology

Cinema 3D

This week our team had the pleasure of attending an event and got a chance to view the new LG Cinema 3D technology. The Cinema 3D line uses passive 3D glasses, similar to those that you would use in the movie theatre. Our opinion? Speaking on behalf of the team, I can say we were all very impressed. There are many benefits to a Cinema 3D TV, and very few cons.

Some of the key features include:

  • Flicker Free 3D Technology with the ability to switch back to 2D at any time effortlessly.
  • The glasses are available for $10 each! Entertaining for 3D movies has never been more affordable.
  • For those that wear eye glasses, LG has product clip-on 3D lenses and for the same price!
  • The cost of the TV is affordable and competitively priced with other LED TV’s on the market.
  • The quality: Compared to the 2010 line up of Active 3D technology, the new Cinema 3D had a much better & brighter picture.
  • Comfortable glasses that never need to be recharged and offer no electromagnetic waves.

After two years in a row, the CES show held in Las Vegas has been flooded with 3D TV and analysts were saying that in 2011, 3DTV was a thing of the past and that it’s constricted to only TV Studios and not something used for entertainment in domestic households. Until of course a company such as LG comes along with a different outlook. LG sees 3DTV more of a feature then a TV itself. Since the average household will not be watching 3DTV on a daily basis, having 3D as a feature at a more affordable price point seems to make good sense.

Many households have also expressed concern not being able to entertain guests as the cost of the glasses were just too high. Or their children had dropped or mistakenly broke the expensive glasses and had to purchase new pairs at the same high price. The LG Cinema 3D TV series is also the first and only 100% flicker free television, certified by Intertek certification.

The glasses are being sold in many colors and in packs of 2 for a cost of $20 at all 146 Futureshop stores across Canada. If you are also looking for the clip-on they will also be stocked in the stores.

The Cinema 3D LW5600 series televisions are also equipped with LG Smart TV. Smart TV connects your computer with the internet for a very pleasant experience matched with the LG Motion remote control. The LG motion remote is similar to the Wii experience so you can navigate using motion to make your on screen selections. Smart TV also has DNLA support for access to all of your home video collection of .avi, .mp4, .mkv, Mpeg, and Divx codecs as well as music playback for your music collection.

Important Specs at a Glance:

  • Full HD 1080p resolution
  • 3D capable
  • 120Hz frame refresh rate
  • 2.6ms response time
  • 4 HDMI inputs with USB, Ethernet, and PC connectivity options
  • **Requires HDTV Source

The pricing currently shows the LG 42″ Cinema 3D LED TV at $1599.99, which also includes 4 pairs of 3D glasses. The next size up would be the 47″ Cinema 3D at $1899.99, and then the 55″ Cinema 3D at $2499.99.

We also got the opportunity to play Call of Duty in 3D on the new Cinema 3D line and heres a quick video of our own Donny Torrefranca enjoying the experience.

(Burnaby, BC) April 1, 2011 – Today, Future Shop, Canada’s largest retailer and e-tailer of consumer electronics, is celebrating the first anniversary of 3D TVs in Canada by announcing availability of the next generation in 3D technology: Cinema 3DTM by LG.  The LG Cinema 3DTM TV recreates the 3D movie theatre viewing experience with lightweight, comfortable and affordable eyewear and delivers crisp bright images and wide-angle viewing.  The first of its kind in Canada, the Cinema 3D display technology ushers in a new era of television viewing experiences.

“We’re thrilled to offer Canadians the opportunity to experience the latest in 3D technology. Together with LG, we are now able to enhance the home entertainment 3D TV experience.” said Todd Empey, Vice President of Store Operations, Future Shop. “We’re fully committed to bringing state-of-the-art electronics to our customers in all departments. To give you an example of our dedication to home theatre and 3D technology, more than 50 per cent of TVs sold at Future Shop in 2011 will have 3D functionalities.”

Cinema 3D creates 3D images that are entirely flicker-free, meaning LG’s Cinema 3DTM technology does not require traditional shutter glasses. This innovation resulted in Cinema 3D receiving the “Flicker Free” certification from Intertek and TÜV, making it the first 3D TV in the world to receive this designation.

“LG is excited to partner with Future Shop to celebrate the anniversary of 3D TVs by launching this innovative product in Canada,” said Colin Bettam, Vice President, Marketing, LG Electronics Canada Inc.  “Technological advancements over the past year have made Cinema 3D much more consumer friendly allowing viewers to enjoy 3D content for longer and in greater comfort. The Cinema 3DTM glasses are more affordable and comfortable, picture quality is clearer from virtually any angle, there is more 3D content than ever before to enjoy and consumers can convert from 2D to 3D as they please.  Overall, the user experience is exponentially better with Cinema 3D.”

About LG Cinema 3D

The Cinema 3DTM glasses use passive technology and because passive 3D glasses do not require a power source, they are more affordable than traditional shutter glasses costing a few dollars per pair, so more people can enjoy an immersive 3D experience. LG Cinema 3DTM optimizes the separation of images for the left and right eye, which are then filtered through the glasses to give viewers a better 3D effect with minimal cross-talk.

Shutter glasses that utilize the active technology use LCD lenses that are commanded to alternately open and shut each lens to show each eye a different image which results in the flicker effect.  The LW5600 model is not only “Flicker Free”, but also improves picture quality with 3D Light Boost, a thin film covering the screen that ensures 3D images are shown at maximum brightness LG Cinema 3DTM TV is available in three sizes and prices: 42” ($1749.99), 47” ($1899.99) and 55” ($2649.99).
