According to Patently Apple, Apple is planning on changing the way we interact with our touchscreen smartphones and iDevices. If these patents are true and that they do make it to the next generation of iDevices, it is certain to change everything all over again.

This design is geared towards the bezel around the display screen instead of the actual display screen itself. The new bezel will change some of the way we will interact with our touch devices.
The display will have what it calls a printed, segmented electroluminescent display. It adds a secondary layer of display and will display control functions on the bezel itself on demand. Aside from how Apple plans to make use of this new design, App Developers are can also utilize this upgrade and can take our gaming and Application user to a whole new level. The possibilities are endless for gaming or app developers as it gives them the ability to customize additional controls such as Virtual D-pad, or other virtual buttons for specific actions.

The Smart Bezel design is also rumored to be capable of only illuminating particular controls depending on the situation. This becomes even more interesting as this enables Apple to have a virtual home button. With a virtual home button, less space is required for this control. Therefore it makes extra space for perhaps, “the rumored bigger screen“? Only time will tell, and it looks like that time will be as early as September.
